October spec script sales highest in five years (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? After three years of reboots, sequels and prequels, the market for original scripts is finally sizzling again in Hollywood.

No fewer than 18 spec scripts -- screenplays written without a contract -- were sold in October. That's the highest monthly tally since before the Writers Guild strike in 2007-2008.

The projects range from a biopic about code-cracking mathematician Alan Turing to a "found footage" thriller centering on killer hurricanes to a relationship counselor comedy that will likely star Ken Jeong of "The Hangover."

"We already knew that 2011 was going to be the hottest spec market in five years, but October's numbers are beyond all expectations," said Jason Scoggins, author of the Scoggins Report and founder of ItsontheGrid.com, a division of TheWrap. "And when you add in pitch sales, buyers' appetites have never been stronger."

In a robust sign of health for long-neglected screenwriters, studios are competing to bid for the hottest scripts and pitches.

In total, 86 spec scripts have been snatched up through October -- more than the number that sold in all of 2009 or 2010.

"A lot of the safe bets in terms of branded, the Harry Potters or the Hasbro products, have had their run, or have not worked out," Brooklyn Weaver, owner of the literary management company Energy Entertainment, told TheWrap. "When you look at things such as 'Inception,' what's working is the original ideas from original voices."

Of the 302 spec scripts that hit the market this year, 28 percent have sold, up from 17.2 percent in 2010 and 16.7 percent in 2009, according to The Scoggins Report.

Just last week, buyers scooped up seven scripts.

All of the major studios have purchased multiple specs over the past 10 months after spending much of the previous year sitting out the market entirely. Among the big buyers are Warner Bros. and Sony, which have snapped up 14 and seven specs respectively over the past year. Fox, Paramount and Universal have each purchased five scripts.

"Buyers have been so cold for so long, but if you look at 2012 or 2013, there is not a lot of product out there for studios," Mike Goldberg, a literary manager with New Wave Entertainment, told TheWrap.

In some cases, the studios are also looking at much improved balance sheets, having weathered the worst of the downturn, a period that also saw a dramatic reduction in the number of major theatrical releases.

"As the recession tapers off, are feeling a lot more free with their money," Goldberg said. "They're back in the development game, but they're doing it smartly so there's not excessive waste."

Gone are the seven figure sums routinely commanded by writers such as Shane Black or Joe Eszterhas in the mid-nineties. Instead, agents and managers tell TheWrap that screenwriters are typically settling for sales prices in the low to mid-six figures, sometimes with a significant bonus coming after a film goes into production.

Moreover, concept alone is not always enough to inspire a bidding war. Getting a prominent producer, director or star attached to a script has become de rigueur to attract studio interest.

One rare exception to the rule, the thriller "Grim Night," netted relative newcomers Brandon Bestenheider & Allen Bey a high six figure deal after the two writers submitted a teaser trailer along with their script.

In some cases, successful screenwriters have kept in touch with studios even after they pass on a pitch or initial draft, revising their projects to reflect their input before ultimately inking a deal.

Some industry observers also suspect that, after sitting out the lean years, screenwriters are putting their best scripts out in the market, creating a snowball effect.

"Fall spec season seems like it used to be," Aaron Kaplan, a literary manager at Kaplan/Perrone, told TheWrap. "It feels like 1997 again. The studios seem to be biting."

Oil near $91 as traders eye Greek debt plan vote

SINGAPORE (AP) ? Oil prices fell to near $91 a barrel Wednesday in Asia amid investor concern Greek voters may reject a plan to contain the country's debt crisis that was brokered by European leaders last week.

Benchmark crude for December delivery was down 70 cents at $91.49 a barrel at midday Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1 to settle at $92.19 in New York on Tuesday.

Brent crude was down 51 cents at $109.03 a barrel on the ICE Futures Exchange in London.

Greek prime minister George Papandreou said earlier this week that he would call a referendum vote on the agreement to cut Greece's debt level, provide the country's fresh rescue loans and require bondholders to accept 50 percent losses.

Greek labor unions have protested fiscal austerity measures, and if voters reject the debt plan, it could spark a chaotic debt default and a financial crisis.

Papandreou also faces a vote of confidence in parliament Friday.

"The euro zone sovereign debt issue that provided a large burst of risk appetite last week has flipped to a major bearish factor this week as the Greek debt situation is suddenly again looking precarious," energy consultant Ritterbusch and Associates said in a report.

Trading volumes of oil futures have been undermined this week by the bankruptcy of MF Global, a U.S. securities firm run by former Goldman Sachs chief Jon Corzine.

"When there is a lack of activity, attrition is normal," energy trader and consultant Blue Ocean Brokerage said in a report. "We could continue to erase gains with little volume willing to support until the market is ready to trade again."

In other Nymex trading, heating oil fell 2.2 cents to $3.02 per gallon and gasoline futures slid 0.8 cent at $2.62 per gallon. Natural gas dropped 0.9 cent at $3.77 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Charter Communications Creates Streaming Directory for Netlfix ...

Charter Communications is making a big push for online content. The cable and Internet provider announced Tuesday that subscribers can now access streaming videos from multiple parties at a single online directory.

Available content from Netflix, Amazon Instant Video and Hulu are all included in the initiative, hosted on the company's Charter.net. The company adds this content to its current library, already included

?Consumers are watching streaming video from a variety of content providers on multiple devices at an increasing rate,? said Rich DiGeronimo, Charter?s senior vice president of product and strategy. ?Charter is embracing this change in landscape, and making the search and discovery for all types of content easier and more convenient for consumers by integrating content from numerous sources into a single online directory. We?re starting by expanding our online functionality, but this is just the beginning of our aspiration to deliver the best customer experience with all video content on all devices, everywhere our customers go -- over the most robust network.?

Charter plans to expand the online directory to tablets and mobile devices over the course of the next year.

Access to the directory now accompanies Charter subscriptions, though users will have to maintain their individual relationships with Netflix, Amazon and Hulu to view the actual content.

Taylor Swift Topless? Singer Threatens Legal Action Over Fake ...

taylor swift

Do you want to see Taylor Swift topless? Gossip site CelebJihad.com claims to have a personal picture of a naked Taylor Swift, but the singer says it isn?t true. In fact, Swift?s legal team has sent an angry letter to the website demanding that the photo be removed.

After carefully scrutinizing the picture (for journalistic reasons) it?s clear that the image is not of Taylor Swift, but the gossip site disagrees. Under the title, ?Taylor Swift Topless Private Pic Leaked?? the site writes:

?After careful examination of this photo, I believe that this is in fact Taylor Swift. The wood paneling on her bedroom walls suggest that she is in some sort of top of the line trailer? which only a hoity-toity country star like Taylor Swift would splurge on.?

Makes sense, right? Any photo of a curly haired blonde naked in a trailer has to be Taylor Swift. There?s just no other explanation.

The Daily Mail reports that Swift?s lawyers say that the site is spreading ?false pornographic images? and ?false news,? and are threatening to take legal action.

Of course, several celebrities have had nude images of themselves posted online after their personal accounts were hacked. So maybe this really is a naked picture of Taylor Swift? No, no its not. (You can judge for yourself and take a look at the Taylor Swift topless pic in question. Obviously, NSFW.)

According to TMZ, Celebjihad is currently considering its legal options.

Do you think the nude photo is really of Taylor Swift?

Dreamworks Animation shares fall on movie opening (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Shares of DreamWorks Animation fell more than 7 percent on Monday after a disappointing weekend at the box office for its film "Puss in Boots."

The animated film took the No. 1 spot at the North American box office over the weekend, but the $34 million take was the company's worst opening since 2006. "Puss in Boots" was also one of the company's most critically acclaimed movies in years.

Lazard Capital Analyst Barton Crockett called the light opening for the big-budget 3D spinoff from the blockbuster "Shrek" series "a challenge for Dreamworks Animation," in a research note on Monday.

"Either the marketing did not click, and the decision to open Halloween weekend did not work, or DreamWorks Animation is suffering from more competition than before," Crockett said.

DreamWorks Animation Chief Marketing Officer said that the snowstorm in the East likely shaved "a couple million" off the weekend's sales.

The firm Caris also cut the company's price target to $23 per share from $25 per share on Friday.

DreamWorks shares were down 7.2 percent at $18.68 in morning trading on Nasdaq.

New Libyan PM forming government (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? Abdurrahim El-Keib, pitched from academic obscurity to head Libya's new government, set about selecting his cabinet on Tuesday, hoping to rally the disparate groups which toppled Muammar Gaddafi behind a democratic peace.

After decades as a dissident in exile, working as a professor of electrical engineering, Keib's family background in Tripoli and his long spells living in both the United States and the Gulf were still being pored over by analysts for clues to his surprise election by the interim ruling council.

Some saw his links to the capital offering a balance to the hold on the National Transitional Council (NTC) by eastern Libyans from Benghazi, the seat of the uprising. Historic regional rivalries are part of a matrix of divisions among the six million Libyans which have been inflamed by months of war.

His lack of past service under Gaddafi, in contrast to NTC chairman Mustafa Abdel Jalil and others, and his presence in Libya during most of this year's fighting, in contrast to the outgoing wartime prime minister Mahmoud Jibril, may also boost his legitimacy as the government tries to organize elections.

Keib was elected with 26 votes from the 51-member NTC on Monday in Tripoli, taking over from Jibril, who had promised to resign once the killing of Gaddafi and fall of final bastions of support allowed last week's declaration of "liberation."

Under a timetable for democracy drawn up by the NTC, an unelected gathering of Gaddafi opponents which won international recognition as Libya's legitimate government, Keib has another two weeks to form his transitional government.

The administration should organize an election in the first half of next year to an assembly that will draft a constitution.

With vast oil and gas reserves and a relatively small population, Libya has the potential to become a prosperous nation, but regional rivalries pent up during Gaddafi's 42 years of one-man rule could descend into a cycle of revenge.

LISTENING

Keib will have to rein in the armed militias that sprang up in towns across the sprawling, thinly populated country to overthrow Gaddafi and reconcile those remaining loyal to the old rule while brokering a new system to govern the country.

"This transition period has its own challenges. One thing we will be doing is working very closely with the NTC and listening to the Libyan people," Keib said on Monday.

An academic and a businessman, Keib has spent much of his life outside Libya, studying in the United States before taking up academic posts there and in the United Arab Emirates.

While Western powers' military backing, which formally ended at midnight on Monday, was vital to rebels' overthrow of Gaddafi in August, Qatar and the UAE provided important Arab diplomatic and military elements. Some analysts believe Libya could now see those foreign allies competing for influence.

NTC members, as well as former students from his days teaching at Tripoli University in the 1970s, described Keib as "quiet and friendly" and said he had helped with the financing of the revolt against Gaddafi.

The prime minister said he expected to choose his cabinet ministers within the two weeks set by the NTC timetable.

Keib did not set out any specific plans for the coming months, but said that worries over foreign oil contracts were unfounded. "We understand that we had 42 years with a brutal dictator ... concerns are in order. But there should be none of them," he said. "We demand respect for our national rights."

DEMOCRACY IN ACTION

Interim Oil Minister Ali Tarhouni, also a dissident academic returned from the United States, had been among the favorites named by observers to become prime minister. But he received only three votes, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the emerging politics in the North African state.

Many analysts have pointed to divisions within the NTC, but Keib said any fears were unfounded: "Within the NTC, what you see is democracy in practice. This is new for us in Libya."

With academic credentials in electrical power engineering and author of numerous research papers, Keib's resume is impressive but noticeably scant on political background.

Ahmed al-Atrash, a Libyan political scientist, said Keib left Libya in 1976 and joined the opposition to Gaddafi.

"I'm not sure if he came back to Libya. Once you get involved with the opposition, it is difficult to get back," he told Reuters. "He was against the regime."

A biography on the website of The Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi, where Keib is listed as chairman of the electrical engineering department, gives his graduation with a first degree from the University of Tripoli in 1973, followed by a masters from the University of Southern California in 1976 and a doctorate from North Caroline State University in 1984.

Much of his U.S. career since then was spent at the University of Alabama, where he was made a professor in 1996.

Atrash said Keib's accession to power may have more to do with the dynamics of Libya than the man himself.

"I think he was elected because he is from Tripoli," he said. Atrash said the NTC, which has been accused of political bias in favor of Benghazi, wanted to "balance things" and show Tripolitans that the NTC is inclusive.

Others speculate that Keib, who is relatively low key, was voted in to fill the post while the main political players wait for the national elections, when the interim prime minister chosen by the unelected NTC will have to resign.
